At the end of a packed day filled with a wide range of programmes, the City Makers Congress wraps up collectively with the annual Guest Urban Critic. AIR and the Van der Leeuwkring invite an international guest to open up new perspectives on urban challenges and opportunities for the city. This year’s Guest Urban Critic is Maria Vassilakou, independent consultant on urban transformation.
This program is spoken in English.
About Maria Vassilakou
The Guest Critic’s role is to share insights and inspire Rotterdam’s citymakers. This year we are thrilled to invite Maria Vassilakou (Athens, Greece 1969). She used to be a prominent member of the Green Party (Die Grünen) in Austria and served as Vice Mayor of Vienna from 2010 to 2019.
Maria currently works globally as an independent consultant on urban transformation. After leaving office, she founded Vienna Solutions, a network of experienced Viennese urban experts and practitioners, with whom she collaborates to build flexible teams to deliver complex urban projects. Maria is known for her commitment to sustainable mobility, such as the expansion of cycling infrastructure and public transport, and to making the city a greener place. Her work has contributed to Vienna’s reputation as one of the most livable and environmentally friendly cities in the world.
Since 2019, Maria is also a member of the EU Horizon Mission Expert Board for Climate Neutral Smart Cities.
